Improved all-optical OR logic gate based on combined Brillouin gain and loss in an optical fiber

Improved all-optical OR gates are proposed, using a novel fiber nonlinearity-based technique, based on the principles of combined Brillouin gain and loss in a polarization-maintaining fiber (PMF). Switching contrasts are simulated to be between 82.4%-83.6%, for two respective configurations, and switching time is comparable to the phonon relaxation time in stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS).

Integrated ef fective emissivity computation for non-isothermal non-axisymmetric cavities

Non-axisymmetric cavities are widely used as standard blackbody sources for radiation thermometry. The integrated effective emissivity is central to the blackbody design. Integrated effective emissivities are numerically calculated for non-isothermal, non-axisymmetric cavities. The average relative deviation is 0.087% when compared with Monte-Carlo results, indicating that this method can accurately calculate the integrated effective emissivities for non-isothermal, non-axisymmetric cavities. The effects of the wavelength, temperature uniformity, and bottom inclination angle are then analyzed.

Real-time video signal transmission over a terahertz communication link

A 2.4-m communication link operating at 3.9 THz based on a terahertz quantum cascade laser and a terahertz quantum well photodetector (THz QWP) are introduced. The lumped electrical models of THz QWP for small signals are presented. A discussion of the bandwidth limit of the detecting circuit is presented. Using direct on – off-keying modulation and intensity detection, the transmission of digital video signal with a data rate of 2.5 Mb/s is demonstrated. Pseudo-random binary sequences are transmitted to investigate the bit-error rate (BER) at different rates. Result shows the error free transmission when the rate is below 5 Mb/s.

All-optical prefix tree adder with the help of terahertz optical asymmetric demultiplexer

We propose and describe an all-optical prefix tree adder with the help of a terahertz optical asymmetric demultiplexer (TOAD) using a set of optical switches. The prefix tree adder is useful in compound adder implementation. It is preferred over the ripple carry adder and the carry lookahead adder. We also describe the principle and possibilities of the all-optical prefix tree adder. The theoretical model is presented and verified through numerical simulation. The new method promises higher processing speed and accuracy. The model can be extended for studying more complex all-optical circuits of enhanced functionality in which the prefix tree adder is the basic building block.
